Tonight as I was returning from the bookstore – where I purchased a copy of Web Analytics 2.0 – I was following a black Matrix that made the short trip through Honolulu difficult. This car slowed down to a near stop at every block, hesitated for second, then continued on. This process repeated at every block.

I assumed by the glow of the GPS unit atop the dash that the confused driver was waiting for the unit to tell him where to go. Finally, he took a left turn and I assume he arrived at his destination. I’ll never know.

This whole incident reminded me of the Oregon couple who got stuck in the snow for three days after being guided by their GPS unit to take a back road. I’m glad the couple are safe, however, it seems pretty dumb of them to take an unsafe route in the middle of winter simply because a phone tells you to.

This led me to a couple questions.

Have we become so dependent on technology that we cannot make decisions for ourselves anymore without technological assistance? Have we become so lazy that we’d rely on our gadgets, gizmos and widgets to make important decisions for us?

I, myself, am guilty. Anyone that knows me knows I am constantly checking my phone. In fact, as I was at the bookstore this evening, I was researching books on my phone’s browser.

The important thing to question is how much we will these new advances dictate our behavior. Will these cool new shiny things be a tool for us to use or a crutch? Has the constant availability of a vast wealth of knowledge diminished the ability of the general public to think critically?

Great Dane

this was probably the biggest dog i’ve ever seen. it was like 6’3″ if it stood up on it’s back legs. crazy.

New Site Design!

I have been wanting to update the look of this site for a long time now. It would take forever to upload photos for the previous hundred or so postings, so only new posts will have images attached. I have moved to a pen and paper to keep track of my workouts, so I haven’t been posting for a while.

More changes to come… hopefully.

alan launder weekend

alan came in on friday.  training-wise nothing much on friday.  pretty much the same old circuit stuff to get ready for the clinic/vaulting saturday.  alan, his wife jenny, joel, and i went to assagio’s in hawaii kai for dinner.  great time.

saturday was a great day.  i helped organize a clinic at iolani with joel featuring alan launder as our clinician.  i participated in a few of the running and plant drills.  i learned a lot about the teaching progression for the vault.  took about 10 stiff pole popups from 4 lefts and about 5 bent pole from 5 lefts.

today was supposed to be my vault day, but we had trouble getting a facility to use.  it’s been very troubling that no one in the state will open up thier facility to be used.  especially for a clinic with alan launder.  instead, we spent our time going over the beginner to bubka film with alan.  so far, this experience it has been incredibly insightful and i have learned a lot about the vault from an international perspective.

stupid ankle

i somehow rolled my ankle tonight.  i was just bouncing trying to warm myself up, and must have landed a bit strangely.  it’s not that bad, just annoying.

track: i was not able to get a track workout in due to the track being occupied.  the next few weeks will be a bit ackward trying to get onto a track since the high school season starts soon.

gymnastics: since i rolled my ankle in the first five minutes of my warmup, i didnt get a whole lot of variety in my workout today.  did the normal warmup, lots of rolls, handstands, and the like.  i did get a pretty decent workout in considering.  i spent a whole lot of time on the tramp landing on my back, front, and seat.  lots of time workout on a ball out.  other than the tramp, i spent almost an hour working on improving my handstands.  another 20 mins on the tramp again and that was it.
